What do you think of when you think of voodoo dolls? Let me guess- You think of violent and bloodthirsty revenge in popular films, books etc. You might think of stories of people who bear a grudge against their energy- The maker thrusts pins into the doll, and the target is cursed with misfortune, pain, and even death. Do you believe it's real? Well, I guess unless you practise it, you'll never know.
'Voodoo Dolls' are typically made from two sticks tied in a cross shape to make a body with two arms sticking out. The shape is often covered in a brightly coloured triangle of cloth and sometimes Spanish moss is used to fill out the body form. The head is of black cloth or wood, and it often has rudimentary facial features: eyes, nose, and a mouth. They are often decorated with feathers and sequins.
Know it or not, Voodoo is actually a religion (not a cult). Its mainly practised in Hatia and other places within the Caribbean. Voodoo practitioners do make dolls, but they use it for a completely different purpose than what mainstream society thinks. They are used to help people heal and are also a way to communicate with deceased loved ones.
