DC Comics is an American comic book publisher. DC Comics is one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies. The majority of DC characters exist and operate within the fictional DC universe, and feature numerous culturally iconic superhero characters, most notably Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, among hundreds of others. The universe also features well-known supervillains such as Lex Luthor, the Joker, Catwoman, and the Penguin. DC also produces characters and stories from outside the DC universe, notably Watchmen and V for Vendetta.
The initials "DC" came from the company's popular series Detective Comics, which featured Batman's debut and subsequently became part of the company's name. DC Comics is based out of New York City (a city that forms the base inspiration for the cities in the fictional universe, such as Superman's Metropolis and Batman's Gotham City).
DC was founded (in its earliest incarnation) in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, and the company now shares the majority of the comic and superhero sector with its rival, Marvel. DC, like Marvel, have been pumping out awesome superheroes and villains into the modern era, with a plethora of movies and TV shows based on its characters.
